Dr. Samar Khalil appeared as a guest on this Take On Faith episode. She discussed Islam and the role of women in Islam with Rev. Xolani Kacela, the show host. She joined the program from her home in Las Cruces.

Dr. Samar Khalil serves as the Vice President of Sisters Affairs at the Southern New Mexico Islamic Center in Las Cruces. She also works as a Graduate Program Specialist, Sr. at the Dean of Academics Office in the College of Engineering at NMSU.

Take On Faith – November 27, 2021

Rev. Gordon Clay and Mrs. Lisa S. Bailey appeared as guests on Take On Faith. They discussed their shared ministry and marriage with Rev. Xolani Kacela, the show host. Rev. Gordon Clay and Mrs. Lisa Bailey joined the program from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rev. Bailey serves as minister of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Las Vegas, NV. He is also a Board-Certified Clinical Chaplain and Pastoral Counselor with the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy.

Lisa Bailey works in the social justice arena with the Showing Up for Racial Justice Las Vegas chapter, the boards of No Racism in Schools #1865, and the Artivists. Lisa was an advance reader for The Black UU Survival Guide.

During the talk, they gave witness to life as Unitarian Universalists. Each spoke about their experiences being in a mixed marriage. Rev. Gordon Clay and Mrs. Lisa S. Bailey also shined light upon the challenges of leading a white church.

Interestingly, the Bailey’s provided insight to the limits of a BIPOC leader in a white church. They spoke about the differences between Black church ministry and white churches. They offered insights to what keeps the two worlds apart.

Rev. Erin J. Walter, UU Community Minister

Take On Faith – October 25, 2021

Rev. Erin J. Walter is a community minister ordained in the Unitarian Universalist tradition. She also plays bass for two bands: Parker Woodland and Butch County. She joined host Xolani Kacela from her home in Austin, Texas. You will enjoy this episode of Take On Faith on KTAL-LP.

Erin Walter talked about her life as a minister in liberal faith. She discussed the sacred part of her ministry many people don’t see. Walter shared much needed wisdom. In particular, she described ways to build bridges over our differences.

The pandemic affects us all, she said. She described how her UU ministry affects the people she serves. A member of the Texas UU Justice Ministry, her work often focuses on social justice. She put light on how listeners can change their neighborhoods by being humble.

Rev. Erin serves the wider community through ministry open to people of all faiths, including:

  • Officiating weddings, memorials, and rites of passage

Rev. Erin serves via songwriting and community building with her band, Parker Woodland.
